If you are interested in Human’s history, it’s worth visiting one fascinating place, which is called the British Museum. It is located in the centre of London, in Great Russell Street. It is London’s most popular tourist attraction — 6.5 million people visit the museum annually.
The British Museum is one of the largest museum in UK and one of the oldest and finest in the world. It was founded in 1753 by Sir Hans Sloane, a doctor and a scientist. Its exposition occupies 94 galleries. If you don’t have a clear plan of action when you visit the museum, you will get lost among Egyptian mummies, Mexican masks, Viking swords and Greek sculptures.
The Egyptians section is always popular with museum visitors. There is a rich collection of real mummies of people and amazing coffins (called sarcophagi). You can see the sculpture of Ramses II and valuable copies of the «Book of the Dead», decorated with drawings and miniatures.
The Greco-Roman collection occupies 12 rooms. It includes sculptures from the Parthenon, a temple in Athens. as well as luxury items of the Roman emperors. In 1872 the collection of antique stones «Castellani Collection» was acquired, which made this department of the museum the largest in its kind.
The museum has one of the world’s finest collections of totem poles. A totem pole is an artistic way that some Indian tribes used for their special ceremonies. The totem pole, about 160 years old, was found in a village in Canada. It is 8 metres tall and made from wood of a cedar tree.
